Human colonization of the Solar System was in its infancy when a massive object, Shard Zero, appeared near Pluto. Scientists soon realized it emitted a "deadly aura" or Plague that warped space and life. Shard Zero eventually collided with Earth, wiping out the civilization of the time.

The game includes a co-op mode where players can experience the story and tackle massive bosses with a partner.
