Following the tragic massacre of the Uchiha clan, Itachi Uchiha joins the criminal organization known as the Akatsuki. The episode focuses on his early days as a rogue ninja and the cold reality of his new life.

Itachi is initially paired with a man named Jūzō Biwa , one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist and wielder of the Kubikiribōchō (the same blade later used by Zabuza). Unlike many in the organization, Jūzō and Itachi develop a professional, if quiet, respect for one another. They complete several assassinations, with Jūzō teaching Itachi the "rules" of the Akatsuki.
