Released in May 1988 as the lead single from her debut album of the same name, the song is a soulful blues-rock ballad that became a global sensation, reaching the top of the charts in countries like Belgium, Norway, and the Netherlands. The Story Behind "Stop!" (1988)

: Initially, the song had a modest start, stalling at No. 52 on the UK Singles Chart in 1988. However, after exploding in popularity across mainland Europe, it was re-released in 1989 and soared to No. 4 in the UK. sam_brown_stop_hd_1988

: After a decade of success, Brown suffered a rare vocal condition in 2007 that left her unable to sing. She transitioned to teaching and managing ukulele clubs across the UK. In 2023, she made a triumphant return with her album Number 8 , using pitch-correction technology to navigate her vocal issues. Released in May 1988 as the lead single

: Sam Brown co-produced her debut album at just 23 years old. When her label, A&M Records, was unhappy with the original recordings and demanded a more commercial cover song, Brown bought back the master copy and released it independently, maintaining her creative vision. She transitioned to teaching and managing ukulele clubs

: The album and its production featured contributions from rock royalty. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd played guitar on other tracks like "This Feeling" and "I’ll Be in Love". Brown herself later performed with legends like George Harrison and Jools Holland .

: The song’s emotional intensity made it a favorite for film. It was featured prominently in Roman Polanski’s 1992 film Bitter Moon and later covered by Jamelia for the 2004 movie Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason .
