Set in on the island of La Española (modern-day Dominican Republic and Haiti), the story begins with a devastating fire in a Taíno Indian village near Santo Domingo. All the inhabitants, who had recently been baptized, perish in the blaze.
Disturbed by the tragedy, Dominican friars travel to Spain to petition King Ferdinand the Catholic for justice. The King appoints Fernando de Rojas to investigate the crime and report on the treatment of the native population. Upon arrival, Rojas discovers a landscape of "lights and shadows," where dreams of a new world clash with the horrors of slavery, the search for gold, and political corruption.
