After 71 years of family ownership, Johnson Publishing Company sold Ebony and its sister magazine Jet in 2016 to the private equity firm Clear View Group.

The magazine covers a broad spectrum of topics, including civil rights, celebrity profiles, fashion (including the historic Ebony Fashion Fair), politics, and business.

While maintaining its print legacy, Ebony now operates extensively as a digital-first platform, offering digital cover experiences featuring contemporary icons like Issa Rae, Busta Rhymes, and Cynthia Erivo, and publishing the "Power 100" list to honor influential Black figures.

Ebony is a cornerstone of American media, serving as a defining, premier publication for African-American life, culture, and politics for over 75 years. Founded by John H. Johnson in November 1945, the Chicago-based magazine has continuously highlighted Black excellence, providing a mirror for the culture and a record of its history.

Ebony has been described as a "mirror of Black excellence" and has played a crucial role in shaping narratives around Black beauty, elegance, and cultural pride.
