Matsuri Kazamaki is a young exorcist ninja, and Suzu Kanade is his childhood friend and an "Ayakashi Medium" whose life force attracts spirits.
They encounter Shirogane, the massive cat-like "King of Ayakashi" trying to devour Suzu. Matsuri successfully seals the monster's power, but Shirogane retaliates at the last second by casting a forbidden spell that turns Matsuri into a girl.
