About the Artisan

Bob Daspit

Maki’s journey is supported (and complicated) by a cast of eccentric characters:

At its heart, Air Master is about , a 16-year-old former gymnastics prodigy. Standing at an imposing six feet tall, Maki feels disconnected from the rigid world of competitive gymnastics. The opening episode highlights her transition from an "invincible" athlete to an undefeated street fighter known as the "Air Master". She uses her gymnastic prowess to execute death-defying leaps and aerial attacks, a style that allows her to "fly" while finding the same pressure and intensity she relished as a child. Combat as a Coping Mechanism

The series suggests that for Maki, violence is not about cruelty but about . Fighting serves as a coping mechanism for her mother's death, filling a void that her "simple-minded" social life cannot. By seeking the strongest opponents, she is essentially searching for herself. This psychological depth contrasts sharply with the show's "puerile" comedy and "brutal" action, creating a jarring but intentional tone. A World of Eccentrics

The 2003 anime series , based on the manga by Yokusaru Shibata, is a unique blend of high-octane street fighting and eccentric character studies. The first episode, "Fly! Air Master," establishes the series' core themes: the pursuit of self-actualization through combat and the visceral "rush" that makes protagonist Maki Aikawa feel truly alive.
